Choreography
Received a 1996 Tony Award nom for Rent and a 1997 Drama League Award for the LA Production. Additional awards include: Helen Hayes nom (2002) Best Choreography for Oedipus Plays, Washington Shakespeare Theatre, NY and a New York Dance and Performance (Bessie) for Alva Rogers and Lisa Jones’ Stained. Theatre commissions include American Music Theatre Festival (PA), Penumbra and Guthrie Theaters (MN) Nat’l Black Arts Festival (GA), En Garde Arts (NY), American Center (France). She has collaborated with playwrights Shay Youngblood, Laurie Carlos, Rita Dove, Sekou Sundjata, Carl Hancock Rux and Robbie McCauley. As founder/artistic director of Movin’ Spirits Dance Theater, commissions include Lincoln Center, American Dance Festival (NC), Jacob’s Pillow (MA), Mass MoCa (MA), Kansas’ Lied Center, Tribeca Performing Arts Center and PS 122. Ms. Yearby’s recognition for her work includes the National Endowment of the Arts, Van Lier Fellowship, Rockefeller Foundation MAP Program and the Jerome Foundation. She is currently developing her company WoomenMoves for the enhancement of women’s lives globally.
